Chika has raised $810 on her GoFundMe page which went toward a portion of her rent in order for her to not be evicted while they are looking hard for a new job. Her story is incomplete and will be added continuously. Please read her story and help family in need.
It started when my husband got laid off from a job that he held for over 12 years. We were just barely holding it together before he was laid off and were on the verge of losing things already. So when he was laid off it all hit the fan. Shortly before he was laid off, our 4yr old had to have a cancerous tumor removed for the 2nd time. She has been battling this since she about 6 months. She had it removed when she was 2 but it came back very rapidly in a very short 2 months after removal. So we watched it very closely for the next 2 years until the doctors informed us that it needed to be removed again as it was causing her leg to grow faster then the other because of all the extra blood going to the tumor. So now are we not only looking at another removal surgery, they also inform us that her leg is 3 1/2 centimeters longer then the other. Doesn’t seem like much but surprisingly it is. She has a very noticeable limp because of the difference. So because of this difference it has caused pain in her other leg and hips, but more importantly they now are talking about a completely different surgery to go in and stop the growth of the leg with the tumor so the other can catch up.
So her surgery to remove the tumor was August 26th 2015, we were back at the hospital 3 days after we were released with complications from her surgery and were there for another week. We were then sent back home and at the beginning of September my husband lost his job with barely any time for us to settle in and get comfortable from being at Children’s Hospital for so long.
As soon as he was let go, we got right to action applying him for every and any kind of job. Assistance with unemployment, the state, work source, food stamps etc. Well of course 1 thing after the other wasn’t working. He was denied Unemployment. So we went to work on contacting local agencies, churches, salvation army’s, etc. He was able to get a whole bunch of interviews but one after the other just never worked out. So we applied him to more and more places. Called any family and friends we thought we had for help, references etc. So more and more interviews came and went. The only person that was able to help for a very short time was his mother. Which is very surprising as she can barely support herself and she has never offered to ever help before. The help from his mother quickly ran out and so did what very little we had in savings. Now we were stuck with collectors calling left and right, Repo companies coming for the car, the rent to own furniture place coming for all our furniture and our bills so over due that things are starting to get shut off.
During all this going on I am having to try to care for a little one and one in a wheel chair. It’s like have 2 new babies. It was extremely tough and frustrating. I also was having a very difficult time with my 11 yr old step daughter, who was on a rampage to do everything she could to disrespect and not listen to me. So now I have all our financial difficulties going on, Repo men showing up left and right, no money coming in, food disappearing with no way to get new food, a child in a wheelchair, an infant and now a very sneaky defiant pre teen.
So as time has gone on we still haven’t been able to figure many things out. We still haven’t been able to pay rent. It is now to a total of $3,331.11 due on December 1st. We have received a 10 day to pay or vacate that our rental company was nice enough to hold off on until the 10th of November, but it obviously has been past the 10 days.
As of now we are still trying to do what we can to keep our house. Especially with the holidays tomorrow and right around the counter, not to mention 2 of the kids birthdays are on January 27th and 29th so I would love nothing more than for everything to be figured out and on the way to being put back together so that I can have somewhat of a holiday season and birthday parties for them.
Message by Aubrey: Chika Skerratt is a fellow MJ in need. If you are not a member of MJ, all you need to know is it’s a badass group of women who listen to each other, and try to help out. I don’t know Chika personally, but I know her predicament. A lot of us have been there in some shape or form. For her, it is a child with cancer, a husband who lost his job, and she is a stay at home mom. They have found themselves in a bind, and need our help! The littlest amount goes a long way when combined with others. It takes a village, people. Thanks for any and all support.
