What is Domestic Violence?

Violent or aggressive behavior within the home, typically involving the violent abuse of a spouse or partner.  Domestic Violence is a pattern of behavior used to establish power and control over another person through fear and intimidation, often including the threat or use of violence.  Some signs of an abusive relationship include:

  • Exerting strict control (financial, social and/or appearance).
  • Needing constant contact including excessive texts and calls.
  • Insulting a partner in front of other people.
  • Extreme jealousy.
  • Showing fear around a partner.
  • Isolation from family and friends.
  • Frequent canceling of plans at the last minute.
  • Unexplained injuries or explanations that don’t quite add up.

Who Does Domestic Violence Affect?

Domestic Violence can happen to anyone of any race, age, sexual orientation, religion or gender. (The National Domestic Violence Hotline)

  • 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men experience violence from their partners in their lifetimes.
  • 1 in 3 teens experience sexual or physical abuse or threats from a boyfriend or girlfriend in one year.
  • 1 in 5 women are survivors of rape.
  • 1 in 2 women and 1 in 5 men have experienced some form of sexual victimization in their lives.
  • 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men were sexually abused before the age of 18.

Domestic abuse involves ways to manipulate and control a partner. Many cannot leave their partners because of financial abuse and they suffer from economic injustice. Please educate our world on the economic challenges which keep these victims in danger even if they choose to leave an abusive relationship.

Rebecca, thank you for your comment. We agree! And often times these financial / legal abuse can be even more devastating and last longer than physical abuse. And unlike physical abuse, it’s not as apparent and easy to detect.
